Everyone has been obsessing over the same mindless features since childhood, but never it has occurred that there are beautiful and meaningful movies out there which surpass the intellectual and creative quotient of cinema but still are ignored at the theaters and even at home at the context of the most ludicrous feeling ‘entertainment’. We take entertainment way too seriously.
The only thing that bothers the creative animals is that why hasn’t the generation of Engineers, MBA’s, IAS/PCS aspirants and everything smart consumers evolved from the cheesy entertainers to a more cerebral genre. Quite a thought right? But truly a wasteful one. Another stereotypical thought that arises is which Movie Industry is better? It doesn’t matter, childish and clichéd movies aren’t subjected to a particular movie industry, it’s only dependent upon the audience it musters up, let’s just talk about Bollywood for an instance.
The Script
Akshay Kumar, the Khiladi of Bollywood once admitted that one of his director made up the story of one of his most block buster films during the ‘shooting’, yes he did say that! See that’s where the Dominian of Bollywood has led the industry into. To be very precise, the movies of India don’t survive on merit but they do on stardom and glamour. Don’t believe the notion? Remember and list out movies that were massive success, here are some-
Partner, Wanted, Rowdy Rathore, Dhoom 3, Krrish 3, Student of the Year. Most of them were either stupid or stolen ideas. Meaning, Bollywood lacks conviction for story, scripts are such a secondary thing, entertainment is everything.
Have you ever wondered what would promotional item songs look like in Hollywood? It’ll obviously look extraneous. The point is futility and creativity can’t breathe together. That’s how Bollywood is gazed upon by the rest of the world. Other movie industries are slightly contrasting from Bollywood, they survive on directors, intellect and typical visual effects. When I say slightly, I mean ‘they are childish and clichéd’ too but still they have better standards, count almost all the Marvel movies, Transformers, The Twilight Saga, etc.
The film makers are so hopeless and skeptical about their craft that they either prefer a less brain storming story or they are actually plain stupid. There’s a norm that is widely believed to be true that is all the uneducated people are obligated to the movie industry, one of the most famous Indian director, Anurag Kashyap quoted this in one of his Interviews.
The Road Not Taken
Bollywood has always been lagging behind in the framework of originality, we live in an era of plagiarism, recycle and remakes. The Film Makers are so dead bound to the scripts which were successful in the past in other markets like Tamil, Malayalam and Hollywood that they won’t experiment with something out of the box. That day isn’t far when we’ll give up watching Bollywood movies for good.
Here’s very short list of Hollywood rip-offs for instance.
Godfather – Sarkar, Sarkar Raj, Rajneeti
Hitch – Partner
Bruce Almighty – God Tussi Great Ho
The Prestige – Dhoom 3
Now You See Me – Dhoom 3
Memento – Ghajini
Reservoir Dogs – Kaante
Scarface – Vaastav
Unfaithful – Murder
Italian Job – Players
Anger Management – Mujse Shaadi Karogi
What Lies Beneath – Raaz
And the list is never ending. These are the most successful money makers of Indian Film industry, hence proving the belief that a successful script can gain revenue consistently. There is a list on Internet Movie Database which contains almost all the movies that were ripped off from Hollywood hits which contains 100’s of movies. The Audience
It’s believed that Bollywood makes such adolescent movies because there always has been a demand for it, maybe audience is a factor in the film making process but they sure as hell aren’t as naive as they are believed to be by the film-makers. The film-makers make an overused script over and over again and claim it the movie fit for Indian audience. There have been directors who tried to push the envelope by making something new and ambiguous for the audience to think over, but their crafts failed miserably, as in they were way too original and required way too much attention, No Smoking for example
It’s not the audience to be blamed for watching childish movies with least use of thinking and concentration, because they are hard workers, they have a busy and cruel life, they use their minds and attention to way more important things. So they have every right to watch a movie which provides them a good time irrespective of their intellect or content, no wonder porn is consumed so much.
The Director
When Farah Khan, Sajid Khan, Karan Johar, Rohit Shetty came into action, Indian cinema hasn’t been able to breathe something fresh,Indie movies have been slaughtered ever since. Still there are silver linings, directors like Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Manmohan Desai, Yash Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, Anurag Kashyap, Ram Gopal Verma (though he has been making non sensical baloney over for few years), Dibakar Banarjee, Neeraj Pandey, etc. who changed the due course of the Indian cinema. Their struggle and uproar will echo through the history of India.
Useful tips:
What’s there in name ?
It’s just a theory and an original one, according to some precise analysis, the content and score of a movie directly depends upon its name. It’s not applicable for all the cases, but up to 80% of the crappiest movies in India have ridiculous names like Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, 8 x 10 Tasveer, Main Tera Hero, Phata Poster Nikla Hero, Aap Ka Suroor ,etc. Where as the best movies have really smart and subtle names like 3 Idiots, Gangs of Wasseypur, Pyaasa, Black Friday, etc. The name of the movie somewhere deep down signifies the mind set and intuition of the film makers, same is the case for any movie of any country’s film industry. If you come across a movie with an absurd name, think of this theory before you do watch it.
The songs
Most people believe that the songs ruin the whole flow of a movie, to which I disagree. I say songs which matter and relate to the conditions and narrative of the story should be appreciated, remember Dil Chahta Hai, Pyaasa, Jab We Met, Rock On, Rockstar, etc. Ofcourse an unnecessary song will spoil the whole chronology of the movie, but a highly effective, emotional and sensible song narrates the story way better than any Screenplay technique of the film.
[alert type=white ]Never ever listen to the Indian Film Critics![/alert]
Yes, a famous dialogue from the movie Birdman says “A person who can’t become an artist becomes a critic”. Popular Indian critics have absolutely no idea about the culture and style of film making. They are just amateur journalists who need to sell their papers and show. Criticism is killing our opinion for a movie, henceforth killing movies too. So it’s high time we listen to our own hearts instead of some pretentious geek whom we don’t even know.
