Top 5 TV Shows by Popular Movie Directors

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]V Shows have come a long way since “FRIENDS“. Be it the depth of content, or entertainment factor, fictional TV Shows are emerging as a powerful form of expression; as powerful as movies are considered to be. There are a few inherent short-comings of TV Shows that have been turned into effective measures. The burden TV producers felt to come up with new material per episode has turned into the possibility of an infinite canvas on which fantasies can be brought to life. There is always the possibility of more; a new season, an extra episode; there is no limit to what we can expect from a story now.

Maybe it is due to this wide revolutionization of small screen entertainment that serious movie makers have time and again taken a dip into Television. From the Mission Impossible 3‘s director J. J. Abrams directing two episodes of Lost to Martin Scorsese directing the pilot episode of Boardwalk Empire, TV has always been an interesting hobby of dream merchants. Though, now with  Cary Fukunaga‘s “True Detective“, TV Shows have finally emerged as a serious viable alternative for already successful movie directors/producers.

So here are the 5 best works of well-acknowledged moviemakers on the Television.

Creator- M. Night Shyamalan

Hmm, another appearance in one of my articles, it seems M. Night Shyamalan, the Master of Mystery, is trying to regain some of his old respect, after the disaster that was “After Earth“. The show is about a Secret Service agent Ethan Burke, who finds himself forcibly stranded in the titular Wayward Pines, somewhere in Idaho. The administration seems shady, the townspeople mysterious and there is an electrified fence around the town’s perimeter too. Though as we learn later, it is all for the good of the folks, and leaving might not be the smartest move for its residents. I can’t give away much of the plot, but trust me, it is a typical Shyamalan.

[button color=”blue” size=”big” alignment=”center” rel=”follow” openin=”newwindow” url=”http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2431438/”]4. Sense8[/button]

Creator- The Wachowskis

The Wachowski Brothers (Now simply The Wachowskis) were the creative force behind the epic Sci-Fi Action Thrillers “The Matrix” and “Cloud Atlas“. It seems that they have an enduring fascination with what I have come to call as psychological science fiction. “Sense8” is another of their stories about a bunch of connected brains. Eight people, collectively known as Sense8, have the ability to tune into each other’s brain waves and synchronize their thoughts and actions. What they also share is a horrific recurrent dream. The show is the story of their path to the discovery of what is the reason for all this.

[button color=”green” size=”big” alignment=”center” rel=”follow” openin=”newwindow” url=”http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047708/”]3. Alfred Hitchcock Presents[/button]

Creator- Alfred Hitchcock

Another master, the Master of Suspense; Alfred Hitchcock has made some of the most enduring suspense thrillers in the history of cinema. It is completely normal to expect a man of such a high caliber to have kept a few musings of his own which never made it to the silver screen. This show is a collection of those very stories. The stories are typical Hitchcock creations, full of suspense, crime, horror and sometimes even comedy. A must binge-watch for hardcore fans of the legend.

[button color=”grey” size=”big” alignment=”center” rel=”follow” openin=”newwindow” url=”http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098936/”]2. Twin Peaks[/button]

Creator- David Lynch

Credited with the making and releasing of Frank Herbert‘s sci-fi novel, Dune, something which even the great Alejandro Jodorowsky couldn’t do (not for the lack of talent or commitment though), David Lynch was always keenly interested in making a TV Series. Following the immense success of “The Elephant Man“, Lynch went ahead with the idea and created “Twin Peaks”; which has a somewhat similar plot as to “Wayward Pines”. Only this time our government investigator is not stranded in the titular Twin Peaks, and he is investigating a murder and not a disappearance. It is too much of a crime to reveal any more of the plot, but you have to be prepared to experience the same confusion and heartbreak as you did after watching “Mulholland Drive“.

[button color=”brown” size=”big” alignment=”center” rel=”follow” openin=”newwindow” url=”http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1856010/”]1. House Of Cards[/button]

Executive Producer- David Fincher

House of Cards may be a remake of a short BBC series, but outweighs its success. It has been unanimously hailed by viewers and critics as the best Netflix Original of this decade. From a director like Fincher, the maker of Fight Club, Se7en and The Social Network, what else can be expected; except a witty, intense and engaging drama. House of Cards chronicles the advent of a twisted and enraged politician Frank Underwood (played by Kevin Spacey), from Majority Whip in the Congress to the President of The United States of America. It is a story of greed, insecurity, love, betrayal, manipulation (both political and emotional), and ultimately, power. It is basically “The West Wing” with immensely corrupt characters. This show is a great eye opener for the US citizens, and a nice refreshment for US politicians. Even Barack Obama is a fan of this show as indicated in this famous tweet before the Season 2 premier.
