Why is your friend the best thing that ever happened to you?

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]oday is the Friendship Day! This day is about appreciating the best thing that ever happened to you “Your friends”. Believe it or not, your friends are the light of your life; they stand beside you in ups and downs, when life says “Screw you”, they give you the courage to “Screw life back”. The bonds we build with our friends go on to create the person that we turn out to be, as these relationships are our first test to cognitive emotions like empathy and social behaviour.

Why is your friend the best thing ever happened to you? Here you have the answers:

“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”

– Walter Winchell

Friends are for life. They know who you are, how you feel, what you need. No other person in the world could know better than your friends do and when everyone walks out, your friends stay beside you.

“A friend is someone who is there for you when he’d rather be anywhere else.”

           – Len Wein

[divider]3. They stand for you [/divider]

“Friends pick us up when we fall down, and if they can’t pick us up, they lie down and listen for a while.”

Friends always stand beside you and for you in your absence. Help them whenever you can and maybe they will help you when you need them. Never leave their side.

[divider]4. They love you unconditionally [/divider]

“A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.”

[divider]5. They fight for you[/divider]

“A true friend sees the first tear, catches the second, and stops the third.”

– Angelique Arnauld

[divider]6. They love you even when you don’t like yourself[/divider]

“Best friends are like diamonds, precious and rare. False friends are like leaves, found everywhere.”

[divider]7. They make you memories[/divider]

“Years later, When you sit back and relish those moments, feeling nostalgic, smiling over all those funny incidents will make you believe that your life was worth living.”

[divider]8. They just don’t show the path, they walk it with you[/divider]

“The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but to reveal to him, his own.”

– Benjamin Disraeli

Life is full of ups and downs, so is our friendship. People get mad at each other everyday and in this materialistic world, your friends are the only thing that will keep you going on. Growing up with all its heartbreaks and letdowns, makes us distrustful. But friends are the people who make us hold on to the child in ourselves. That kind of everlasting acceptance is an asset in the time of anguish.

1. Always listen to your friends

Don’t anticipate you know what your friend is going to say. People believe that listening is passive, but no. Listening is not passive but active.

2. Always keep your word

Don’t agree to do something that you cannot. It’s hard to turn your friends down but making promises you cannot keep is much more dangerous.

3. Never tend to take more than give in friendship

Never take advantage of your friends’ generosity. Always tend to give them more or equal. Sometime people don’t appreciate what you gave them, no matter how great it was. But that doesn’t settle it, talk to them and explain it. People can be stubborn but you yourself should be a giver.

4. Never keep too high expectations

Adjust your expectations over time but not at the cost of your friendship. Approach this reality positively and be realistic about what your friend can and cannot do for you.

5. Try to stay in touch in any way possible

Sad but true. Most of us are busy and our friend becomes mad sometimes when we do not give them time but our friends are more forgiving than we think. Never be afraid of getting rejected, just pick up the phone and call them whenever you have time. Meet them when you can.

6. Always apologize sincerely

Ask them for forgiveness but do not use and condition. Never tell them what was the condition that made you do so. If you did a mistake, just accept it without using “If” or “But”.

“Show the world what you are made of. There are unlimited possibilities of doing impossible work when you are together. Make people fear your union. Make them know you stand for each other. No one will say a word against your friend in front of you. They will call you ‘husband-wife’, ‘chacha-bhateeja’, even ‘guru-shishya and make desperate plots. They will try to break you, divide you, rule you, but they will fail. That is the beauty of friendship.”
